This is an overview of how to download, install and configure local licenses for AGI (ANSYS) products on Windows. This includes STK, ODTK, and STK Scheduler.
We have also posted accompanying videos that follow along with these instructions on the YouTube page. The videos are linked below.

License configuration: How to Configure Licenses for AGI Software - ANSYS License Manager and ANSYS Licensing Client
AGI products operate as network licenses, meaning there is typically a system in the network running the Ansys License Management Server with all the network's licenses. This allows any users connected to the network to share the server's licenses. The "local licensing" method is the process of running the license manager on the same device that is operating the software. In this tutorial, we cover the process of configuring a single license for a single device, which means you will configure the Ansys License Management Server, allowing your device to behave as the server and the client. To do this, you will link your license file to your Ansys License manager, then point your Ansys Client Licensing Settings to your device's Ansys License Management server. Once your local licenses are set up, you can simply run STK and STK will automatically be able to use your licenses, regardless of the network you’re connected to.
Overview: This tutorial is broken down into four steps.
1. Request and Download License: If you do not have your license file yet, you will need to request it from Blacknight Space. This process is covered in the How to Request a License article in our helpdesk, under the Submitting License Information Section. You will simply need to send the Disk ID Number and Host Name of the device hosting your license to support@blacknightspace.com, and you will be provided with a license file. Download this license file to your computer and save it somewhere it will not be deleted.
2. Download desired software from AGI: To get the downloads, simply go to the downloads page, create an AGI account, and download the software you will need. If you are using SOLIS, you will need to request it directly from AGI Support (support@agi.com). You may need to temporarily disable your firewall to download the zip files.
3. Install your software: You will now install the software you've downloaded.
Install STK ODTK: First, install STK ODTK first. You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus to run the installer.
Install additional software: Now you can install the STK Premium and Enterprise, and Specialty modules using the same method of unzipping, running the install executable, and following the install wizard instructions.
4. Configure Your Local License: Before running STK or ODTK, you will need to configure your license server.
Open your .lic license file in notepad and confirm the hostname and port number. At the top of the license file, you will find a section formatted as such:
SERVER <Hostname or IPAddress> <Hostid> [TCP/IP port]
VENDOR ansyslmd [path to ansyslmd] [options="path to options file"] [port=daemon TCP/IP port]
Point Ansys License Manager to your downloaded license file:

We have also provided a list of common troubleshooting fixes below to address any issues you may be having.
STK crashes after loading:
If STK is crashing upon starting a scenario, it may be a graphics issue. Check if STK uses a graphics card by starting STK then looking at Help -> Graphics Card Info.
If your graphics card is being used, try updating the graphics card driver, and this should help.
If you have a high-end graphics card but it is not being used by STK, try modifying your settings to use the graphics card by following this tutorial.
Crashing can also be caused by a bad install. Try uninstalling STK by going to your search bar and searching for the AGI Software Uninstaller application. Run as administrator, uninstall the software, and reinstall.
Your install may also be corrupted, and you can try uninstalling STK using the AGI Software Uninstaller application on your device, and re-downloading and installing STK, following the instructions of this tutorial.
If neither of these fixes help, try this more in-depth troubleshooting tutorial.
Antivirus is preventing installation:
You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus while you complete the installation. Remember to re-enable after completing installation.
For McAffee, you can go to My Protection on the left, open Real Time Scanning, and Turn off (45 minutes should be plenty).
For other antivirus, navigate to the Disable or Turn Off option, and temporarily turn off your antivirus until you have completed installation.
Firewall is causing errors during licensing setup:
If your firewall is creating errors such as "lmgrd error" during setup or while running STK, you may need to create firewall exceptions on your computer. The fix will be dependent on the OS of your license server, so we recommend getting your IS/IT department involved. If you know your license server is running Windows, you may try whitelisting the license server as follows:
For Windows License Servers:
License not found:
There are a few reasons this may occur. Listed are some common issues that can cause this and their fixes.
Multiple Client Licensing Settings application versions:
Firstly, ensure that you only have one version of the Ansys Licensing Client Settings application installed. You can verify this by searching Ansys Licensing Client Settings in your search bar. If, for instance, you have the 2022 R1 version of Ansys Licensing Client Settings application installed from an older installation of ODTK, the new 2023 R2 licensing client settings you installed with STK could have issues. In this case, you can use the AGI Software Uninstaller to uninstall your old AGI software and reinstall the newest version.
Check that you have licenses available on your server:
Look up Ansys Client Licensing Settings in your search bar and run the application. Navigate to Diagnostics -> Display Flexnet License Status. Here you will see the number of licenses you have for each Ansys application you have licenses to, and how many are currently in use. Ensure that you have fewer licenses in use than the number of licenses issued, and that you have licenses issued.
Check that the license is correctly uploaded and referenced:
Look up Ansys License Management Center in your search bar and run the application. Check the following pages:
Find your .lic file (check that it is the same as the one referenced by the license manager in the previous step) and open on textedit or notepad. At the top of the file, you should see the file formatted as such. Do not edit the hostid value!
SERVER <Hostname or IPAddress> <Hostid> [TCP/IP port]
VENDOR ansyslmd [path to ansyslmd] [options="path to options file"] [port=daemon TCP/IP port]
Finally, look up Ansys Client Licensing Settings in your search bar and run the application. Navigate to Flexnet Publisher -> License Servers and ensure that the Port matches [TCP/IP port] value from your license file and check that Server 1 matches the <Hostname or IPAddress> value from your license file.
